Experience Emotion

Students living with ACEs sometimes become very good at "not feeling" because, too often, experiencing emotion leads to disappointment. Want to help that student move forward from a feeling of hopelessness to one of hope? Simply giving them information is unlikely to cause change. On the other hand, when we connect in relationships at the level of feelings and emotion, meaningful change happens. Relational health is the single best predictor of positive outcomes. This means we must be willing to be vulnerable as well and experience emotion with them. We must offer unconditional love and non-judgmental support. This isn't easy. It takes time. It takes patience. One must have faith in the process. This process can't be measured with data, but it is the most important thing we do.
